It came to each men in two distinct ways. Donald lost his father this year and I am sure his Dad would have been tremendously proud of this son. I believe he is the first player to win the money title on the PGA Tour and the European Tour in the same season. Lehman has now won the Player of the Year Award on all three tours over the span of his career. He also is the first player to do that.Knowing Tom personally, I believe he would say that he is honored to have received the award, but more honored that he know Jesus Christ personally. We consider the remarks of Steve Williams, as reported, entirely unacceptable in whatever context. We are aware that he has apologised fully and we trust we will not hear such remarks ever again. Based on this, we consider the matter closed, and we will have no further comment."

So, isn't saying anything "racially motivated" considered the makings of a racist? Or does one have to say continued racial slurs to be called a "racist?" Well, that is obviously the decision of those who make the rules. But what about God's rules? “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you
are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28

Well, that is God's answer to whether or not we are to be a racist, but what about when we say "racial slurs?""Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. James 4:11

Of course a lot has to do what the person was doing before he made the remark . . . celebrating with alcohol(maybe too much) and "oops, there it is . . . the remark!"

I would hope that Williams has learned that what causes us to say "wrong, hurtful things . . . stupid things," is that one is "hurt, angry, mad" his or her self.

"Speak the Truth in . . . With Spring beginning to push the blossoms so does the weather push the best in the players. One of my favorite tournaments is the Crown Plaza Invitational, known as The Colonial, May 19-22.

The Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial golf tournament is the longest running event on the PGA Tour still being held at the original site (since 1946). The players of today know they are competing on the same hallowed ground as the great Ben Hogan who won the championship five times in his hometown. His legacy permeates the event, and that's just part of the tradition that helps make the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial what it is, one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour.

At this event every year the Tournament puts on a fantastic "fish fry" for the Caddies on Thursday evening after the round. We have over the years had our Bible Study right there afterwards and invite any caddie who wants to join us. It has always been a time of great fellowship with each of those who attend. We will do the same this year.

Together again will be Steve Hulka(Brian Davis) and Andrew Martinez(Tom Lehman). We haven't been together like this in a few years.

Please pray for our Bible Study on Thursday night, May 19th.

To God Be The Glory . . . .

Pastor Ron

<link rel='related' href='http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/r021/' title='Crown Plaza Invitational . . . My good friend Steve Hulka will be working for Matt Bettencourt, who won the Reno-Tahoe Open last year. Normally, Steve works for Brian Davis. They will the start the season together the following week at the Sony Open.

I am excited to be able to support various caddies on the Tour. I will be at as many tournaments as the Lord enables me to attend. Probably the greatest ministry is to be able to pray for these guys by name as they maintain a Christian witness on the course. Texting and Facebook are just some of the ways I stay in touch with each of them.

Hoping that The Right Club Ministries can make an impact not only in each of their lives but the players who they work for, and others around them. Davis came in second to Jim FuryK in a tournament due to the fact that he DQ himself after an errant shot out of the rough. What you don't know is the guy who carries his bag is someone you need to hear about . . . caddie Steve Hulka and his wife Mary. Check out the link . . .

Steve and Mary have been dear friends for 19 years. I had the privilege of marrying there 2nd oldest daughter this Summer in Chicago. What a great occasion with a great family. He and Mary are wonderful Christians. I am grateful to be their friend. I had particular interest because I know Brian, but more importantly to me is the fact that his caddie, Steve Hulka, is a very close personal friend of mine. It was good to see them battling it out for a win. What I particularly want to note is that Steve is a strong believer and follower of Jesus Christ. I know he shares with Brian all the time about his faith. I am not aware if Brain has any religious beliefs. He and Steve have done well together these past two years.

What I have noticed is that those whom I network with (Twitter and Facebook) are impressed with Brian's integrity to have done what he did. He could have not said anything and the liklihood of anyone noticing his club hitting the loose impediment would have had to had a microscope. He did what was right. He brought the infraction to the attention of the rules official, Slugger White (some name for a PGA Tour rules official). Had someone called it in after Brian signed his card, he would have been DQ from the entire tournament.

The Bible teaches this: "Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart." Psalm 51:6.

I don't Know if Brian has ever read that before but his caddie has and I am certainly glad his is on the bag with him.

"13 1/2 Minutes of . . . Many of you in this room know me. Many of you have cheered for me or you've worked with me or you've supported me.
Now every one of you has good reason to be critical of me. I want to say to each of you, simply and directly, I am deeply sorry for my
irresponsible and selfish behavior I engaged in."

And so he opened his statement to the press. The apology (so it seems) lasted 13 1/2 minutes, explaining as little as necessary what had taken place in his private life. As you already know, much was said before and much has been said after his apology. But, was enough said by Tiger himself?

Personally, I think he said just what he was capable of saying as one who isn't necessarily very capable of making a concession speech. You see, he is normally in the winner's circle, answering reporters how he won the Tournament. That was no doubt hard for this man to do.

I have shared with close friends on the Tour some of what I thought of his situation and what I personally feel he needs in his life. He has admitted to the lack of influence Buddhism has had on him in his life time, but intends to return to that faith.

It was interesting to read what the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, say concerning a principle of Buddhism: "Whether you call it Buddhism or another religion, self-discipline, that's important."

Interesting thing to say about a man who is in the game of golf is more "self-disciplined" than any man alive.

What I would convey to him if he and I were able to have a conversation is this. "Tiger, according to the Word of God, you are living just the way you are supposed to live outside of knowing the True and Living God. You are following your Father . . .the devil. That's the way he wants you to live . . . " I would further explain to him that in Christ, there is complete forgiveness and atonement for his sins; freedom from the power and penalty of sin; and a peace that transcends all human understanding; Eternal Life. It is only in Christ that one can truly live a life that is pleasing to the Sovereign Creator of all the Universe.

"I once heard, and I believe it's true, it's not
what you achieve in life that matters; it's what you
overcome. Achievements on the golf course are
only part of setting an example. Character and
decency are what really count."

No, Tiger, what really counts in life is this: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. of the 21 century. It seems like yesterday that we were all scared into "Y2K" or bust or the "sky is falling" hype by the naysayers! Well, we have survived and maybe even advanced . . .a little. Remember September 11, 2001; GWB for 8 years; Iraq and Afghanistan wars; Al Qaeda; Sport champions; tragic suicides by celebrities, a new and African-American POTUS; economic disaster; and then there was Tiger Woods . . .?

As a follower of Jesus Christ; a pastor/husband/father/grandfather it is gratifying and humbling to know that when every thing around you changes that God, who is All-powerful, All-knowing and All-present, never changes (Heb. 13:8). His Word abides forever (Mt. 24:35)

Last year I was a "Shirker and a Slacker" when it came to reading the Bible through. I would read and then skip to something else instead of interest. I recently came across a Bible reading plan that was designed for . . . "Shirker's and Slacker's" that will help some of those who are like me at times and need to "mix it up (my wife has always thought that I might have been ADD growing up)."

Justin Taylor over at THE GOSPEL COALTION has posted an article entitled, "Bible Reading Plan for Shirkers and Slackers." Read it and download the reading schedule for this New Year.

God has been gracious this past year. He faithfully has seen me through my heart-surgery recovery. He blessed us back on November 6 with a beauty grandson, Joisas Christopher Harvey. We are looking forward to seeing him in the flesh this Saturday, January 2-12. We can hardly wait. A new family is created . . .
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/SzvlDeS4eYI/AAAAAAAAAVM/vO50A4KiUeU/s320/IMG_1125.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5421178424305154434" />

Now may God's richest blessings exhaust themselves on you so that it seems like there is none left for anyone else. He is on the road "Somewhere USA" hauling equipment for players on the PGA Tour and caddying. He has been hauling equipment for 8 years and caddying for over 30 years. Hopefully he is celebrating today with his wife Mary, who travels with him.

Steve and I met in 1978, when he and his player (David Graham) were playing a practice round with Jack Nicklaus, at my home course in Monterey, CA. We both shared that we were believers and got acquainted that weekend at the Crosby. We later saw each other at the L.A. Open in 1991, when he was working the Tournament. Since then we have been associated in a ministry on the Tour doing Bible Studies with some of the caddies.

I am proud to say that he and his family are dear friends. I have watched his kids literally grow up. All of them are going or have finished college. They had to go to University of Arizonia in order to get him rooting for the PAC-10. Now, he is hooked.

We share another rivalry. He is a diehard SOX fan and I am a loyal ANGEL fan. We love the bantering.

Steve I love you man and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, old guy . . . .!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 218px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/Sq7AXfudVOI/AAAAAAAAAVE/AQRpygSc8Lo/s320/truckandtrailerfinalversionsmall.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381450114640205026" />

In 1923, Who Was:

1. The president of the largest steel company.
Charles Schwab, died a pauper.

2. The president of the largest gas company,
Edward Hopson, went insane.

3. I was kept over the weekend for observation in the Telemetry Unit of St. Bernadine's Hospital in San Bernardino, CA. On Monday, my cardiologist did a angiogram and discovered that I had at least two arteries blocked. She couldn't see the two others that were supposed to be there. On Tuesday, March 2, I was taken to surgery where my doctor performed a quadruple bypass (see the picture). I woke up in ICU to find that I was on a respiratory until I started breathing on my own. I did that right away (scary). Within two hours I was walking to a chair to sit up. My family was with me from that point on. My son flew in from KY to be there and was my "bodyguard." What a great job he did to let me sleep and rest when some people came.
As I reflect during these past 4 weeks during my recovery, I find myself more grateful to God for life, family, and friends. I have been released by my surgeon and have seen my Cardiologist. Things are looking very good. I went to work this past week for two days only staying for a few hours. I can drive in two weeks and then start cardiac rehab, 3 times a week for 6 weeks.
I must publicly thank my wife Renee for all her care for me during these weeks. I could have not done it without her. She has the best place in my heart for who she is.
I am taking great care to eat and exercise. My goal is to lose 50 lbs and to keep it off.
I thank God for the good gifts He gives His children. My heart surgery was His good gift to me.

Yep, Obama Is a Golfer, Too

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/SXZXkgyvlLI/AAAAAAAAAPc/jOQwk0UVlDQ/s320/gwar01_081226obamadigest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293514696810271922" />
Don Van Natta Jr., author of the book, First Off the Tee: Presidential Hackers, Duffers, and Cheaters from Taft to Bush.

1 John F. I am doing this for 2009. In the last couple of years doing studies with the caddies has been somewhat difficult. There was a year where there was what I will call a spiritual glitch. It was confusing and has cause this ministry (The Right Club Ministries) to loose momentum. We will try again this year to regain some of the lost territory. I appreciate your prayers.
Beginning in January, we will try to conduct studies on what is called "The West Coast Swing." I look forward to the opportunity to be able to share the gospel with the caddies. That is what lead me to this ministry 16 years ago.
If you would like to help with this ministry financially, please email me at caddiechaplain.com.
Thanks and God bless you all . . .Jesus is the Right Club! So we come here with the hopes of reaching out to some. If you know anything about this ministry, it all began here in Las Vegas in October of 1991. These past 17 years has hopefully produced some fruit in the lives of those we affectionately call the PGA Touring Caddy!

Please join us in prayer as we share the gospel with whomever the Spirit of God directs us to. While the team will be missing the most famous golfer in the world in Tiger Woods, Kentuckians can be happy as two of its own made the final roster, including 2004 Ryder Cup member Kenny Perry and newcomer and University of Kentucky graduate, JB Holmes. The final four selections will join the original 8 members who were awarded spots on the team based on their final PGA points total.

The automatic 8 members are as follows:

Stewart Cink: This 35 year-old Ryder Cup veteran has been on three previous Ryder Cup teams, posting a 3-5-4 record. Cink attended Georgia Tech and turned professional in 1995.

Ben Curtis: Curtis joins the 2008 team as a first-timer in the Ryder Cup. The 31 year-old is a graduate of Kent State and turned professional in 2000.

Jim Furyk:: The 2008 Ryder Cup will be Furyk’s fifth time as a member of the US team. This graduate of Arizona University boasts a career Ryder Cup record of 4-9-2.

Anthony Kim: Another Ryder Cup rookie, Kim is the youngest of the members of the US team at age 23. Kim graduated from the University of Oklahoma.

Justin Leonard: Leonard returns to the US Ryder Cup team since his last appearance in 1999. Leonard graduated from Texas and has played in 8 Ryder Cup matches, posting a 0-3-5 career record.

Phil Mickelson: With the most impressive Ryder Cup resume on the 2008 team, Mickelson has a career record of 9-8-3 during the Cup. He ranks as the most experienced Ryder Cup member, having played for the US team 5 prior times.

Kenny Perry: Kentuckian Kenny Perry returns to the Ryder Cup for a second time, coming in 3rd place in PGA points. With an 0-2-0 record, this Western Kentucky graduate comes in as a local favorite.

Boo Weekley: The last of the automatic qualifiers, Weekley comes into this year’s Ryder Cup as a rookie, and attended perhaps the least known of the players’ colleges: Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

The last four chosen:

Chad Campbell: One of the last four of the Captain’s picks, Campbell brings prior Ryder Cup experience to this year’s team. A UNLV graduate, Campbell turned professional in 1996.

J.B. Holmes: The second Kentuckian to make this year’s team, this Campbellsville, KY native is a graduate of the University of Kentucky. It will be his first time on a Ryder Cup team.

Hunter Mahan: Mahan also joins this year’s team as a rookie. Hunter Is 26 years old and attended Oklahoma State University, turning pro in 2003.

Steve Stricker: The oldest member of the US Ryder Cup team at 41, Strickler will be another of the six total US members who have never been on a Ryder Cup team.

Azinger brings a relatively inexperienced group of players to Valhalla for this world-class golfing contest. However with names like Mickelson, Furyk and Cink on your team, coupled with two home state competitors, all bets are off as the host nation hopes to bring the trophy home.

'I'M ALL RIGHT, DON'T NOBODY WORRY 'BOUT ME'

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/SLMxy-Qaq5I/AAAAAAAAAJw/PolxnnQCsa8/s320/helensider.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238585543337094034" />

Call it the Caddyshack moment of The Barclays. As in gophers digging under the course. After Sergio Garcia hit his second shot behind a tree on the second playoff hole -- the par-5 17th -- he sought and received relief for what Garcia called "gopher holes." Or more to the point, gopher tunnels.
"It was not where my ball was, but like about five or six feet left, (the ground) was actually moving," Garcia said. "You could see the grass going up and down."
Because the unstable ground threatened to impact Garcia's shot, he was allowed to drop one club length away, per rule 25-1 for abnormal ground condition that interferes with a player's stance or the area of his intended swing.
Meanwhile, Vijay Singh had to wait after hitting a superb second shot that left him 20 feet for an eagle putt (and eventual two-putt for the birdie and the win).
"I wasn't really concerned about him," Singh said. "I just wanted to know why he got a drop. There was obviously a mole there, and he was burrowing at the moment -- you could see him popping out."
The only thing missing in this scene, evidently, was Carl Spackler.

Just a couple of cuties!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/SJTNrrR-qrI/AAAAAAAAAJM/JT17DGrJvaw/s320/IMG_0146.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230031217520192178" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/SJTNfjdRfPI/AAAAAAAAAJE/cXdWhOuPCIA/s320/IMG_0151.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230031009261649138" />What can I say? My bet is on Phil. I think he is primed to win another Major, why not the The Open? I know, he missed the cut last year. Yea, and Trevor IMMELMAN, finished tied for 60th and won the Master's this year

Remember Caddy Shack?

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/SH0yacmLUzI/AAAAAAAAAIc/R7oxjMS4tMk/s320/265614.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223386572753949490" /> Wow! It only cost me a box of Pro V1x's. Not a bad deal considering how much they cost. I have used it several times on courses around where I live. My subscription ran out so I renewed with the US plan (a whole lot more courses than I'll play). I plan to play several courses in Vegas next week and then a couple in New Mexico in August. It's cost? $49 for a subscription for the year.
I have to say that I think it is ideal for the average player (me) and will help the yardage part of the game immensely! More later on him . . . .

It's Tee Time At The Master's!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/R_0899pHBGI/AAAAAAAAAD0/KcibsBs5kfA/s320/journal6.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187369381017355362" />

Wow! Wow! What can I say? This time of year has got to be the most incredible time in the life of sporting events. March Madness, Final 4, Opening Day in the Major League Baseball, and of course . . . .THE MASTER'S. If you have never been to Augusta and in particular, the Master's, then . . . .pray and ask God for a miracle! I have had the privilege of going 4 times. The best time I ever had was when I was able to take my son Chris, for his college graduation present in 2000. That was unforgettable, to say the least.

My predication for this year's winner is . . . . Geoff Ogilvy! He is in my opinion is playing some great golf. He has won once this year and could just be the dark horse. Keep an eye on him.

Tune in this Thursday for some of golf's finest moments. Just remember the old saying, "The Master's is won on the back nine on Sunday afternoon!"

Where Have I Been . . . .?

My son has been on my case to get back to blogging. I guess I've been away for no apparent reason other than I have not been out on the Tour to minister to caddies in that setting. Although, I have been in touch with a couple of my caddie-buddies, Steve Hulka and Chico Fernandez. They both had a good off season of rest and are ready (already are)to hit the trail. Steve more so than Chico.

One of the things that has been occupying my time has been the need to work with a team of students whom I will be leading on a trip to India in June of this year. We have meetings every week and other types of training exercises. I will be out of country for 3 weeks. It looks to be a very profitable trip to say the least.

I am making plans to be in Fort Worth in May for the Colonial. I look forward to that opportunity. My good friend Bill French lets me stay with he and his wife Linda. They enjoy going to the tournament. I enjoy being with them and their family.

So, there, I did it son! One of my closest friends Steve Hulka, was working once again for PGA Professional Joey Sindelar. At the close of the the 2nd round on Friday it looked like the cut line was going to be -5 par. Joey was at -4 par. He decided that he wasn't going to make it in, so he got on a flight to New York, his home. Later that evening after the scores were all in, the cut was at . . . you guessed it, -4 par. There was no way he was going to make it back. He WD (withdrew).

The year before he and Steve finished tied for 9th. To think he could have done that or better. We'll never know.

My First Visit to U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/RwFZO1XaI0I/AAAAAAAAACk/YE6Its54lzU/s320/409x338_ballpark_guide.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116468763047895874" />

Last Friday night with my very good caddie friend, Steve, "The Hulk," Hulka, I attended for the very first time a Sox game at their own U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. This is where the legendary Comisky Field once stood for years. If you look at the diagram picture in this post and specifically the yellow section behind home plate . . . THIS IS WHERE I SAT! AWESOME, DUDE! There. I feel much better.
It was an incredible evening. Paul Kenerko (he played for the San Bernardino CAL League while I was chaplain) and Jim Thome both hit home runs. And let me tell you about BOBBY JENKS, OKAY! Sorry about that, I'm still excited about the evening. Back to BOBBY JENKS. He came in the top of ninth to pitch his 40th save of the season. As he came out of the bull pen the crowd were on their feet screaming, "Bobby! Bobby! It was deafening to say the least.

The game ended with the Sox beating DET, 5-2. What a great night for baseball!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/RwFhCFXaI1I/AAAAAAAAACs/SrzhfcjrAKI/s320/capt.169361cbe87d4f6b9920ec0ef68994b5.tigers_white_sox_baseball_cxs116.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116477340097586002" />

Good For Phil!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/RuCn-d_-JqI/AAAAAAAAACc/LUa97tGeiuQ/s320/headshot-135x95.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5107266669084812962" /> If you have followed Phil Michelson at all, you know that he is a guy who, since he got married, has taken his marriage vows very seriously and is in fact, a family man. His decision not to play this week is in my estimation a virtuous move on his part. I applaud the fact that he would want to be home and see his kids off to the start of school. It would seem to me that the money in this tournament does not compare to family values.
I have always liked this guy when he first appeared on the scene and I still like him. I will post some pictures of the event tomorrow. So hang in there sports fans. The picture you see here was taken in Hawaii last Thanksgiving. Yes, I know, it's a shame that he's so cute and doesn't get to go any where. This tournament is the PGA Tour's only "major." It is an incredible week of the PGA Tour and the World's top 125 players, vying for the Crystal Vase, over a million dollars for 1st place, and a 5 year exemption on Tour.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/RjpgV192DsI/AAAAAAAAABU/RrVZGHZuQOk/s320/perks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060463059684167362" />

Of course, one of the highlights of the week is the famous "island-green 17th Hole." This hole, more than any other, has crushed the dreams of many an aspiring golfer. I position myself on the island side of the hole and watch players hit into the par 5 16th and then into the island-green 17th. It is a great two-hole display: they can eagle/birdie the 16th and lose it all on the 17th.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kMddv7-LtqM/RjpiUV92DtI/AAAAAAAAABc/gtBqx574FnQ/s320/sawgrass17thgreenallwhitebadz-200x155.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060465232937619154" />

I am looking forward to seeing many of the caddies who I have ministered to over the past 15 years and to have a time of prayer, bible study, and sharing together.

On Monday after the tournament, the caddies have their annual tournament and I have been invited to play.

Please pray for the week. Last September, Dave made a sliding, downhill five-foot putt to win the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship. With that win in the 36-hole final, he garnered an invitation from the Augusta National Golf Club to play in this year's Masters.

He has been practicingat Augusta National for a weeks. He has driven up Magnolia Lane a total of 6 times before this week.

The peice of advise that Womack plans to follow is this: "Just enjoy yourself." "To hit that first tee shot on that first tee. . . Golfers live their whole lives and they never get to see the Masters, much less play." To drive down Magnolia Lan and to be at a place with so much history, its surreal. Go down the roster's from the 60's, 70's, 80, and the 90's (they won it in 95') and every year produced a crop of guys who have played in NBA and have done very well, thank you very much. Why the attitude in the last sentence? I'll tell you why, because the PAC-10 does not get the respect it deserves. There were 5 teams in this years tournament; 4 in the Sweet 18; 3 in the Elite 8; and now 1 in the Final 4! That's greatness, you think?

I didn't enter a pool this year, but I have to say that I am not disappointed with the way things have come to this point. We all have to agree that we have seen some terrific basketball (I have been so absorbed in March Madness, that I didn't even notice that guy who scored 50 points last week. The blogger son and daughter are now ragging on me so I had better do something . . .
Since I last posted, I have been to Hawaii (my wife's 50th, remember that?), Las Vegas with the kids during Christmas (my daughter-in-law had never been), the Bob Hope Classic in Palm Desert, and the Buick Open in San Diego. On both golf outings, I was able to hook up with my caddie buddies, Steve Hulka and Andrew Martinez, eat some great Italian, Tri-tip, play a little golf and enjoy some great fellowship . Both brothers are doing well.
So there, I have posted for the time being. I shall return with a lot more stuff as it unfolds. "I hate it when that happens!"

Probably the highlight of the weekend was spending time with my 3 nieces and going to church on Saturday night with some of the family.

It was as I said, "a mile high, but miles from home" . . . leaving for home this morning to see my sweet wife and my PRECIOUS grandbaby! I'll blog a post on him next.. .

My "1st Born" and His Bride!

Renee and I have been blessed with two wonderful Adult Children and their spouses. This post is about our "first born" and his sweet wife. Christopher was born October 21, 1977, 12lbs, 6oz, 24" long! Yes, he still is a big kid (man)! His sweetheart wife Arelis, is just 5'2" and as cute as one can get. They live in Louisville, Kentucky. Chris attends The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, working on a Master of Divinity in Apologetics. Arelis teaches Spanish, but is switching to work for a Medical company in just a couple of weeks. They were married April 1, 2006, and my self and Arelis' father had the privilege to perform the ceremony.
Chris, while attending classes, also works for UPS. It has been a wonderful job for him thus far. The two plan to be involved in some type of mission work when Chris finishes Seminary. Chris is a pretty good golfer but does not have time to work on his game. He hits the ball a ton! Oh, to be young and a flat belly once again!
By the way, it was his 29th birthday yesterday! Happy birthday, bubba!

A decision that will not come easy!

On a personal and sensitive note . . . I have been away from the Tour for a year now. The reason is very complicated and would by no means be very easy to explain in that it would be simple gossip and potential slander of certain individuals who I have known for a long time. I will say that the Lord has taught me that life is "not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord!" I have resigned to the fact that it was God who gave me the ministry and it was God who could take it away at any moment. I thought He had until last weekend when I was with my long time friend, Steve Hulka (Steve of H.O.P.E.)

I am now praying as to what I should do before the next Tour season begins. I have been fortunate for the past 14 years to have been given a credential by the PGA Tour to attend all Tournaments absolutely free. The only thing I have ever needed to do was to get to the Tournaments and conduct a Bible Study and hang-out with Caddies, which I have thoroughly enjoyed all these years. God has been faithful to provide the way.
I must now regain the confidence of those I have served in the past and to gain a sense that they are in favor of this happening. I will begin this process of reconciliation and then let you know what I think God is saying. Please pray for the wonderful men and women who are caddies on the PGA Tour and who need a fresh touch of encouragement in the Lord.

Why Caddies Shouldn't Tell How Much They Make!

If you take a look at this picture of 4 PGA Tour Caddies, one of them is not working for a certain player anymore because he revealed too much information about what he makes.

There are 3 rules to caddying: "Show up" (be on time) "Keep Up" and "Shut up" (keep your finances to yourself)

"It's Hard For a Caddie To Make a Living Out There!"

I am often ask what Caddies make out on the tour. My answer has always been "not enough!" When you consider that everything he or she gets goes for not only living expenses while working, but living expenses at home on top of that. A lot of people are thinking of Tiger's caddie. He must make alot of money. Yes, he does. And those who's player are on the top 30 money list do as well. That's the exception, not the rule. Another thing to consider is that each caddie has to handle his or her taxes, insurance, travel expenses, retirement, social security, etc. If you are self-employed you understand what I am talking about.

Some caddies look for other ways to make extra money: sponsorhships from other companies, i.e, sunglasses, hats, clothing, etc. When they are not working on their own player's bag for that week, they are looking for other bags that might be open. For a caddie, it's a year-round job if they have anything to say about it.

The longevity for a caddie on a bag is sometimes short-lived. It all depends on one's abiltiy and likabilty from the player. I have seen guys work from one week to maybe several years. There is one caddie who has been with the player for 23 years! It is currently the longest standing relationship.

Like I said, "It's hard for a Caddie to make a living out there!"

Vegas, Frys', and Golf

Traveled to Vegas to watch the Frys' Open Invitational this past weekend. It was good to watch the two of them work hand in glove. Two seasoned veterens working well together. On Sunday morning before the final round, Steve woke up with food poisoning. He struggled to finish up on a final hole from a "call of darkness" the day before. He went back to his place to rest and came back out still sick and weak, but managed to finish caddying. He and Joey finished a great round of 5 under par for the day, and twelve under for the Tournament. Are these guys good or what? "I can do all things through Christ who strengths me." He was working for a player named Ted Schultz. We immediately formed a kindred spirit. Jimmy would always take great notes at our studies. He was an encouragement to me.

Last Friday, after a battle with cancer, Jimmy's mom went home to be with Lord. The funeral is this Tuesday in Louisville, Ky.

Okay, What does "inside the ropes" mean?

If you ever have been to a PGA Tour Golf Tournament, you have probably noticed that what separates you from the playing field (a lot, I might add) is a very long stretch of rope on both sides of the fairway and the greens. Try to cross that when play is on without permission and you're going home. "Inside the Ropes" is nothing more than that area that the Tournament has designated for "Players Only."

Now what has that have to do with the name of this blog spot? Well, in 1992, when I started this ministry, I was privileged to be "inside the ropes" with Andy North (two time U.S. Open Champ) at Pebble Beach, Ca during two practice rounds of the U.S Open being held there for the third time. I was what they call, "looping" for Mr. North because his caddie wasn't due in until later that week. What a thrill of a live time. I was paid $60 a day for two days. By the way, I had only caddied once before for a guy who was trying to qualify for the Open (and he didn't make the cut).

So, I feel like I can write about golf and the ministry I have done with caddies for 15 years a little bit better having been where they are all the time. I mean just a little bit better. . . .hopefully.

My goal all these years has been to get these guys "inside the ropes" of Christianity through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ by "grace through faith." We have had some success over the years. The caddie pictured is good friend Andrew Martinez, Tom Lehman's caddie for the past 14 years. He is a faithful witness along with some other brothers.

So, there you have it. You now know. Please take out a piece of paper . . . we are going to have guiz . . . .!

Let's Get Started. . . . Well, the time has come to quit putting off the inevitable and to just do it.
Born in Oxnard, CA, I grew up in Socal ( and a couple of years in San Jose. Became a huge Giants fan back then; the 60's). After high school started my education in Chicago, then England, Tennessee, Georgia, and finished up in Fort Worth, TX., for Seminary. Somewhere in that mess was a nine year stint with Uncle Sam( was a nurse).
But best of all was my marriage to Donna Renee Sipes from Augusta, GA (yes, I know, the home of the Master's) in 1973. After 33 years of marriage, we have 2 grown and married children and one grandchild(more about all that later). God is good, all the time. All the time, God is good!
We currently reside in Socal, where we have been for 21 years. I serve as Associate Pastor of a Baptist Church in Riverside. My wife is a Resource Specialist in a middle school and has worked doing this for over 20 years.
Now, about the kids. Thought you'd never ask! Our son, Christopher, 28, just got married to a wonderful young lady named Arelis Pacheco, in Louisville, KY (Chris is an MDiv candidate at Southern Seminary). He graduated from Cal Baptist University in Riverside, and did a Master's in Sports Management at Cal State University, Long Beach, CA. His goal is ministry somewhere, someday. Arelis, is a graduate of University of Louisville, in Spanish and Art, and teaches Spanish in Public School. Our daughter, Amanda, 26, is married to Cameron Moreland (6 years this August) and had our first grandchild, Ayden Christopher Moreland this past June 27, 2005. Amanda graduated from Cal Baptist University, Riverside, and taught school before Ayden was born. Cameron is a graduate from Cal State University, Fullerton, and is completing his Master's in Sports Conditioning. He currently works for a medical/rehab company. He desires to be a strength coach at a major university.
So, there you have it. It's a beginning (like a Christmas newsletter. . . . oh, well)!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://caddiechaplain.blogspot.com/2006/04/lets-get-started-finally.html' title='Let's Get Started. . . .
